The microscope

rsoh01.jpg
Rob Turner donated this box
of crap.
rsoh06.jpg
It had this microscope lens
and we wanted to display
pictures on Alan's
semi-flat display monitor.
rsoh04.jpg
We took this box apart that
has a CCD camera and an
electronics board.
rsoh05.jpg
This is the board that was
attached to the camera.
rsoh07.jpg
After much playing around the
monitor still refused to
work. So we had to actually
look at the documentation.
rsoh09.jpg
Jeff looking pretty sly.
rsoh10.jpg
We switched to a different
camera and a different
monitor. So we tried to focus
on a dime.
rsoh12.jpg
Here is the first image we
saw.
rsoh14.jpg
We decided to mount the
microscope in a vise.
rsoh13.jpg
And then it was eaiser to
focus on things and easier to
adjust the lighting.
rsoh15.jpg
The traces on the PIC-SERVO
board we have been playing
with the last few weeks. The
reticule on the screen is 5
mils per division.
rsoh16.jpg
The solder joints on the
surface mount chips on the
PIC-SERVO board.
rsoh17.jpg
A real close up view.
rsoh19.jpg
Some secret writing on a 20
dollar bill.
rsoh20.jpg
The glowing surface of an LED
from a fiber optic
transmitter.
rsoh21.jpg
Some salt crystals.

Lasers and diffraction gratings

rsoh25.jpg
We found this grating in the
trash. It is the servo
positioning unit from an old
harddrive.
rsoh23.jpg
We shined the laser through
the slots to create this
pattern.
rsoh24.jpg
And this one.
rsoh26.jpg
And this one.
rsoh27.jpg
After changing the focus you
can see the actual slots in
the grating.

Other

rsoh22.jpg
Jeff opened his R/C
transmitter to make an
adjustment to the servo pulse
widths.
